In an effort to embrace and welcome the members of our community who need accommodations, the Diocese of Des Moines has begun hosting Sensory-Friendly Liturgies. These Masses include lower lights, softer music, and shorter, more literal homilies; however, the biggest difference is that we try to create an environment free of stigma. We encourage families and individuals to get up and move if needed, to bring alternative seating, and to participate in the liturgy just as they are.
A Sensory-Friendly Mass will take place at Ss. John and Paul Parish on Sunday, October 18 at 10:30 am and all are welcome to attend. A special invitation is extended to any person with sensory issues. Families are encouraged to bring materials that can assist with comfort during the liturgy: noise cancelling headphones, wiggle seats, fidgets, etc.
Additionally, there will be an opportunity to use our new hearing assistance equipment and large print I-pads, to follow along with the liturgy. Arrive early and our Engagement Committee members will be available to assist you with the new equipment.
Low gluten hosts are available by stopping by the sacristy and making a request with Father Mark or one of the ushers.
Contact Jenni Lihs with any questions.
